A Magnificent Pair of 18th Century French Chateau Hand Wrought Iron Andirons (Chenets) with detailed metal work throughout (note the intricate barley sugar twist standards and the front inverted scrolls facing to the backs of the chenets), including cupped and ringed tops used for keeping pots of food warm as well as serving as light sources for large pillar candle cups in the summer months when the fireplace was not lit at night, and with the whole raised on wonderfully elaborate and exaggerated volute scrolling feet. Provenance: Reportedly, part of the household inventory of Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg at in the Alsace region of France (specifically in the village of Orschwiller), first constructed in the Middle Ages and designated as a “monument historique” in 1862 and then a national historic site of France in 1993 by the French Ministry of Culture. It is now a major destination for tourists traveling the French Alsace wine region
